Well this is it.

The end of the course. I have enjoyed teaching you all and getting to know you and especially seeing each of you develop greater maturity over the last two years. I wish you all well for the future.

Today a student reinforced what I have told you all several times - that is, the need to use colour in the exam paper. We established that around 20 marks were available just for using colour. The total marks for the paper are 120, therefore we would lose about 18% of the total paper marks by NOT using colour. This is equal to one grade. So, what I am saying is to remind you all to bring coloured pencils to the exam as none will be provided.
I have given each of you a folder/wallet of revision material to revise from. I hope this helps. Practise making the folding mechanism especially.
Remember your orthographic drawing rules regarding dimensioning a drawing and where to put the dimensions. If in doubt see me at school.

I will be going through two exam past papers and giving you copies of the examiners answers - these will remind you of the STRUCTURE OF THE EXAM. THE QUESTIONS WILL, however be related to the topic Greetings cards and invitation cards with paper engineering aspects.
The rich diagram we all copied is really our focus for research.
I will give everyone some revision material on top of what we do in class.
For the exam remember you will need coloured pencils as well as a ruler and pencil and pen.

Hello to all students and parents,
great strides have been made recently by a number of students resulting in an improvement in their coursework marks.
However our time for adjustments ends this next week as the exam board have sent us the forms to complete which indicate what the students have achieved.
So, I will stay Monday evening to finalise marking - this will be a time for 3D outcome improvements to coursework - but that is all the time we have.
From now on, Tuesday onwards we are preparing in depth for the exam.
I have created 3 large picture files to help students - see the P drive.

Well everyone this is the final week for folio adjustments.
I am particularly pleased with CH, MJ, ST, MR, recently who have tried hard and produced some good work.
Can we all make sure the practical work is done as well as you can - as practical is worth more marks than the folio.
I will give everyone an idea of how many marks they have acquired and how many they need to get a C grade overall after the weekend - in fact I will endeavour to post on this site.
It is THURSDAY now - 4.05pm and I am sorry to say no one has turned up.

So at present folio is a D but will improve to a lowish B if the work is done.

I have prepared a number of sheets for various students to complete. Mostly these are specification sheets. IT IS VITAL that everyone has completed this particular page. We will have 2 weeks after going back after Easter ( plus the Monday of the third week )to complete all work including models.

Folio comments regarding provo marking

First remember that the folio provides only 40% of the coursework mark and that the practical attracts 60%
It is therefore VITAL to produce good 3D outcomes.

Folios generally started well with research and analysis however as the demands progressed some students let themselves down with general lack of effort. I have suggested ways in which to improve your folio mark. Students will be given 2 weeks after Easter to respond. In that same time we need to get the practical work complete.

I am collecting folios in during the last week giving students a little extra time to finish. Practical work is encouraging with lots of ProDesktop work having been produced as well as Photoshop. Ross really needs to work a lot harder considering the help he is getting from others. Otherwise apart from a couple of students we seem to be progressing well.

I have been encouraged to see some good work recently from many students. I have decided to collect folios in the last week before Easter for marking. All work should be completed on the folio. Evening sessions on top of class sessions will continue up to Easter to complete practical work.

I will issue the outline for the examination this week for those who want to gather relevant information. I will also endeavour to issue specific help for this afer Easter.

Joe and Ben Ox have had their shop models progressed and they can see these tomorrow.

HOMEWORK. ( PARENTS PLEASE BE AWARE AND HELP TO REMIND YOUR SON )
FOR HALF TERM PLEASE COMPLETE THE TWO SHEETS ISSUED THIS WEEK - IF YOU MISLAID YOUR COPIES SEE ME. THE TWO SHEETS ARE A RISK ASSESSMENT AND A QA/QC SHEET. BOTH OF THESE ARE SUPPORTED WITH HELP PAGES GIVING TIPS AND EXAMPLES.

Photoshop will help all students to progress their work - whether it be a board game or a shop or magazine etc. I have put a photoshop help video on youtube - but check for other help which can be very good.

I will place some of the images in a folder on our P drive at school in the usual place which will contain the pictures shown. Remember to adapt these to reflect your choice of corporate colours.

Poor efforts and disappointing application

Sorry to be negative but had to exclude BenOx for silly behaviour.
AlexSt and RobB still showing little effort.
On a positive note most of the main items, whether shop models, games boards and boxes etc have been made and just need the finishing designs to be applied.
Had problems with faulty printer all last week and today. However printer problem now sorted - it was a faulty network connection !!!!!!!!!!!!

Homework for half term is to complete two sheets, one for RISK ASSESSMENT and one for QA and QC. Both sheets will be issued to everyone next lesson. Explanatory notes will also be provided.

Parents who could not make the recent parents' evening

Hi there,
Basically I have mentioned the need to complete coursework - especially the practical element - that is - the models of shops, games etc. This element is worth almost two thirds of the total coursework.
Thursday lunchtime, Monday evenings available plus the 5 /6 weeks left.
Also I have sought help for the students who are a little behind with their work from the school/student learning support department. I am glad to say this has already started and should be effective for those involved.
Today it was pleasing to see students more focussed - I was especially pleased to help JS, RssC, JCrno, to progress their 3D outcomes. Have popped to supermarket and bought a clear bottle for RssC which will provide a clever solution for a curved glass corner!!! wall for his shop model. (;o)

Parents Night

Hello everyone - I really enjoyed meeting everyone and sharing information and hopes for a successful outcome to the course. We have another 6 weeks of teaching to top and tail the coursework. Obviously some students are bang on target justifying their hard work. Some students are needing to consolidate, refine and appreciate the importance of the practical element of the coursework.
To this end I am busy trying to assist with the practical and have put on an extra evening session on Monday and another Thursday lunchtime.

Students applying themselves will do well - however we need some students to work in every lesson constructively to achieve their potential.

The exam for this year is based on the 2008 paper.

The paper is a controlled test in effect and asks you to design an outcome for a situation previously issued to you ( 1st March in exam year ).
As such the exam content is basically focussed on solving the design situation.
It does, however require some knowledge WHICH IS RELEVANT TO THE SITUATION being tested on. Perhaps it might ask you to explain a technical term or ask which process would be used in a certain situation.
BUT the majority of the marks relate to your design thinking and graphical presentation - so you need colours, erasers, pencil etc.

We are pretty much on target for most students. Regrettably some students do not possess a work ethic and still need to focus on their folios.

Hoping to get all main folio elements complete by Christmas break - some additional sheets will be added later under my instruction. Some students have already made their basic minor items such as key fobs, business card holders etc.

Practical 3D major outcomes need to be started no later than beginning of January.

Welcome back after half term

Okay everyone you must now begin to think about making your 3D outcomes. As everyone has been given their own area to develop the outcomes are varied. Quite common minor elements are things like business cards, identity badges, keyfobs, gift pencils, cd packaging all of which can easily be made.
We need evidence of you making items - not all - I suggest that evidence is taken from your main 3D outcome, shop models, exhibition stands, boardgames etc.
Folios should be completed by Christmas at the outside. Some students need to be aware of this and really try harder to complete the folio work
After school sessions will take place from January.

No one needs to get too stressed - most people have some good elements recorded in their folios already yet I guess some of our early work lacks finesse and will need to be looked at again before final marking.

RC period 4 after lunch seemed very tired caught resting head on desk. Later shown how to set page up using MS Publisher. Ball confiscated. Seems to lack understanding.

Two groups 11X and 11Y.
Both quite different. Slightly concerned with 11Y which includes some students who are making poor efforts. The progress wallchart is helping us to identify both progress and also lack of progress. I will endeavour to inform parents with an interim progress report soon.
On a pleasing note some students are working very well.

Folio progress is steady generally. We are at aarly October.
point where students MUST focus on the work outstanding for their folios. Some students seem to be progressing in an orderly fashion which is good but no one is at the stage where they have produced enough - if any in one or two cases, enough development sketches of their designs. These must be done first to allow students to get on with making by early October

Next week everyone will sit down and complete their introduction and brief together in class. I will provide a temeplate for this.

On a disappointing note need to mention that the use of mobile phones in class is not allowed. Please appreciate that the school policy is to take these from you and to return later. Texting and gaming is not allowed especially at this time when students need to be focussed on completeing their coursework.

I am checking progress of the students at the present time. It is good for the students to understand what they need to do to keep up. Most students could have produced more than they have done although by-enlarge they are only a little way off target. As always there seems to be a massive maturity gap between the quality of work students complete in year 10 and in year 11. The former being almost always lacking refinement and quality. Nevertheless a useful kick start to the essential coursework.

Some students attitude is still unfortunately unfocussed and evn their standard of work is still reminiscient of a young year 10 student.

Shortly, I hope to update all parents in writing indicating how their sons' are getting on.

Please call me or email me if concerned.

It will be difficult - though entirely possible to hit 80% A*-C if the students apply themselves.

Students generally very tired today - very hot and previous lesson was games.
Went through mock exam with rest of group to help prepare for actual exam on 23rd June.

Very hot in the room.
Boys split between ICT research finding business card images and others producing rough drawings of business cards. Have provided template for students to complete.
CW missing from 10Y group.
RB struggling to focus in spite of being given lots of help.
CH AS MJ and RB working well as a group.
ICT - Matt produced 2 A4 pages of BC research.
NH and TMc ICT abuse using software for making a model of a plane !!!!! 2.40pm

Signs of students maturing and taking responsibility .. however a handful across both groups are causing me some concern.
Rob and Mark - Matthew and Chris need to address their lack of application and perhaps their effort and behaviour.
Nevertheless most students are on track.
My overall impression is the quality of work - I am anxious that students produce high quality pages for their folios. The pages need to be busy, full of images and colour. Presently some students are not quite there yet. IT IS VITAL THAT ALL STUDENTS NEED TO KEEP TO THE TIMEPLAN in order to succeed and reduce stress later on.

All students have completed their logo design rough drawing sheet. Most have started their A3 sheet of research about logos. This sheet should include cut and paste examples not solely those from the internet. A structured presentation ( that is using a grid which has columns for common comments - colours used, fonts? target market etc )is a good idea. See me for more help if needed. Though all students have decided their projects - each needs to have a sheet with an introduction to the idea and a brief.

Parents Evening feedback

Wow - it was great to see everyone, both students and parents, at last nights parents evening.
I hope I explained everything to enable us all to contribute to the students success over the next year. Just a brief bit of feedback from today's lesson to say that the logo development sketches all look promising ( still proving difficult for some students to simplify their designs however ) .
Next week - fingers crossed we will all get our logo design reproduced using Microsoft Paint ( if not it will be a priority homework).
Thus we will have a digital picture which will then be used on several outcomes. The main project ideas have been interesting to scan this year and it is nice to see boardgames making a return.
Hope everyone has a good holiday and that the sun shines on us all on Monday.

Parents' evening tonight - note for parents

Hope to see as many parents / guardians as possible tonight - all appointments slots seem to have been taken though I realise that there are really not enough for all my students. If you do not get to see me tonight please contact the school and I will try and send written comments to you. I would like all of us to have the exam year plan displayed at home - I will be passing these out tonight. They indicate the major needs of the course - ie folio headings and making ideas. Again, if you do not see me tonight I will try to post these to you.

As I have mentioned below you need to consider your project - what are you going to design for your major project?
Our first task is to CREATE A LOGO.
THIS NEEDS TO BE AS FOLLOWS
ONE page of logos research ( images from the internet, magazines etc ) - on this page we need to see comments about each logo, consider number of colours, complexity, shape etc.
Then you need to produce ONE busy page full of small development sketches including notes and use of colour OF YOUR OWN LOGO DESIGN. If you cannot think of anything a starting point could be your initials.

Begin thinking of a project
Okay everyone we need to start thinking about your major project - this is the real one which will used for your examination.
This is the last year we have this flexibility - subsequent years choices will be limited to a list supplied by the exam board.
SO THINK ABOUT YOUR PROJECT.
IT needs to be graphical in overall content. It must allow for items to be made in 3D which exhibit the use of graphics.
Look at previous years outcomes for ideas. ( http://bgstechnology.blogspot.com/ )
Some ideas have included,
CAR EXHIBITION STAND DESIGN with logos and stand graphics.
CAR MODEL ( see papertoys.com ) made from a net, incl point of sale packaging, adverts etc
MOBILE PHONE design a mobile phone to include packaging and a full size model.
DVD / CD design including all cover and disc graphics - advert, logo etc
MAGAZINE COVER ( include plastic sleeve and header ) subject ideas vary, cars, football
restaurant / shop design with internal graphics - scale model.

ALL OUTCOMES USUALLY NEED LOGOS, BUSINESS CARDS, LETTERHEADS, BADGES, possibly items such as coasters, keyfobs, desk adverts, PLUS LOTS OF OTHER GRAPHICS SUPPORTING WORK.

GENERALLY ONE MAJOR OUTCOME PLUS 3 OR 4 MORE SUPPORTING ITEMS is sufficient.

All the students have been given revision guides free of charge today - hope this helps with revision later. Deadlines will soon be putting pressure on all of us so can I remind everyone that the folio must be kept up to date - we should now be working on our developments - that is our rough and final designs. All to be finished ready for making by half term.
